Life

Oh yeeah, life is pretty good at the moment. Early starts, sore feet, and I’m super tired. But I’m enjoying myself, and that’s the main thing yeah?

So it’s calving season right now (Actually it started on the 22nd of July I think…) and it’s not as busy as I thought it would be. I think the most calves we’ve got in one day was around 25? I’m not sure. But it’s not as much as I thought. I’ve been learning quite a lot, how to pick calves up, how to tag their ears (although I don’t like doing that… it looks rather painfull..) and that some calves have to be donged on the head. I haven’t donged one yet, and I really hope I don’t have to, because as a girl, I know I’ll get emotional. I haven’t even watched it been done yet, and I tend to cover my ears, although I can still hear the *bang* of what ever is hitting it’s head. Morbid stuff eh?

So we are milking now, (finally..). We have to mobs. One mob is “milkers” the other are colostrum’s. What are colostrum’s? WELL! They are the cows that have just calved, and are producing milk for calves which is rich in… whatever it is calves need to survive. Those cows stay in that “mob” for about 4days, (we dot them each day so we tell how long they’ve been in there for…) then we “draft” them out to the milker mob.

The calves are really cute! Although the bobbies (boy calves) get sent to “the works” after 4 or so days, which is sad because some are really cute, but I have to man up and not pet them. Also some Heffer calves (female calves) get sent also, they are called “low line” calves. They get sent because they are not the breed we want.

All in all, I’ve learnt a lot these past few weeks. And I’m still learning. It’s really tiring, I swear I nearly fell asleep in the shed this morning (we have 5.30am starts, soon to be 4am).

On the side of living alone? Yeah well, I’m starting to get a little lonely! But I have a CAT now! YAY! His name is Takker, don’t ask how the name came around. Because Richard (my work-mate) just started calling him that. So I took it on as it’s name. I think it was meant to be offensive.. Tough. I’ll have to edit the post later and post some picks of him. He’s just a little kitteh, maybe some calves too… OH and the beautiful sunset I get to see in the mornings.

Wowa that went fast. I have so much to say but not sure how to put everything. My Grandmas wedding is soon. Part of the terms of me coming here was that I get time off for it. They said yes. And I can still go, but Jareds formal is coming up also, they also said yes to that. But I think one of the bosses forgot I had the wedding. So I kinda feel bad now. But it’s his LAST formal… so they can’t turn around and say no after they’ve said yes can they? I hope not. :( I’ve booked everything already. All up the time off comes out at 2 days. Yeah, not a lot considering I’ve been working a month + straight. No weekend breaks, sometimes no lunch (70 hour week… ILLEGAL.. but what can I say..) and this is my first calving. So the LEAST they can do is miss me for 2 whole days all up?

Well that’s about it for now. Still have more to say, not sure I should make the post so long. Plus it’s lunch.. (I actually have lunch today… an hour maybe more if I’m lucky…). I’m so tired. Coffee isn’t really doing it for me, maybe I should put more coffee in. MOAR COFFEEEEEE. MOAR.

*Yawn*. Hope I taught someone something today. :P
